Keep in mind, this model only discusses the time the teacher spends in either Spanish or English, not the students. Students are always understood regardless of the language they are speaking. Spanish speaking students end up speaking as much if not more English then in a regular classroom, because they are the initial translators for the teacher. Lastly, this model works the best when the class is evenly split up: 50% of the students should come from Spanish speaking homes and 50% of the students should come from English speaking homes.
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL (grades 6-12) MODEL SUMMARY
For Grades 6-12, Lake Tahoe Unified School District has adopted a model where the goal for each student is to complete 25% of their coursework entirely in Spanish and 75% of their coursework in English. Currently, due to staffing issues and scheduling constraints, the curriculum offered in Spanish includes Spanish Language Arts at each grade level (this includes AP Spanish classes) and Social Studies in grades 6-10. Electives are offered to complete the 25% for the 11th & 12th graders. As students gain autonomy and classes become more varied, students move through high school more independently (and less like a TWBI class). The goal in the upper grades is to increase fluency and literacy in both languages to cultivate contributing bilingual and bi-literate adults!
